The number one question coming into our office this time of year is about which essential oil is the best for keeping ticks at bay. Experts on the subject recommend Geranium, so we are taking a moment to share our outdoor spray recipe along with a few fun facts about #geranium.
Geranium is distilled from the leaves of the Pelargonium graveolens plant. Widely used as an ingredient in perfumes throughout the world, it has a sweet floral smell similar to Rose. However, unlike Rose, this essential oil is extracted from the leaves and not the flowers. It's uplifting, mentally balancing, and helpful in relieving stress and anxiety. It's great for skin care because it helps to balance sebum.
According to the journal of agricultural and food chemistry, Geranium EO is effective at repelling ticks while having lower concentrations of active ingredients.
To make our Outdoor Spray…
Mix two parts water, one part witch hazel, a tablespoon of aloe vera, and 15-20 drops each Citronella, Eucalyptus Lemon, Lemongrass, Geranium, and Lavender in an 8 ounce mister bottle.
Whether out on the lake, hiking, reading outdoors, or sitting by a campfire, we love this spray so much we take it everywhere making this is one recipe we can't help repeating.
The EOs in this recipe are nontoxic, non-irritants, and generally non-sensitizing, making it safe for use with children and pets - but always be sure to dilute your EOs. Use this spray on your entire family, including pets.
