Wyndmere - Summer Sale 2025: Couples Camping.

Summer Guide to Using Essential Oils

When summer comes to the land of ten thousand lakes you betcha we can be found lakeside with a fishing pole in hand.

Or poolside with a book and a beverage.

Or on the trails, or up north, or ….. You get the idea.

After months and months of winter, we Minnesotans like to take full advantage of the nice weather by getting outdoors as much as humanly possible.

But with the longer days and sunshine come all the pesky nuisances that make it hard to enjoy oneself outside.

That being said…We’re going to share Wyndmere’s favorite tips for using essential oils and natural solutions to help you make the most of your summer.

Essential Oils For Bites & Stings

An inevitable part of summer we don’t quite enjoy?

The bugs and their bites!

But not to worry -- we’ve put together the best essential oils for bug bites and stings, so you can make your own DIY blend and get back to enjoying summer fun.

Best Essential Oils for Bug Bites and Stings

Chamomile Roman - Its soothing effect can be especially helpful for bug bites, reducing redness, itching, and irritation. Chamomile can also help speed up healing and recovery times.

Lavender - Although best known for its mood-improving and calming effects, the benefits of Lavender essential oil can include reducing pain and itchiness that often comes with bug bites.

Peppermint - Peppermint essential oil is extremely versatile and often used for relieving pain and swelling. When applied to the skin (properly diluted in a carrier oil), it exerts a cooling sensation (which is precisely what you need after being bitten!). In addition to aiding in stopping that stinging, burning, and itching sensation, Peppermint essential oil may also reduce the risk of the bites becoming infected and speed up the natural healing process.

Tea Tree - A potent antiseptic, Tea Tree essential oil has been used for hundreds of years to treat a variety of skin complaints and is an excellent remedy for bug bites. Studies suggest that Tea Tree oil is a natural antihistamine, reducing the body’s allergic reactions and itching sensations. Many who use Tea Tree for bites say it’s a helpful tool for alleviating swelling and itching. To make, simply add 2 drops of each pure essential oil to an empty roll-on bottle. Fill the remainder of the bottle with a carrier oil like Jojoba or Grapeseed…and just like that you’re ready to go!

Essential Oils To Keep You Cool During The Hot Summer Months

Essential oils are a great tool to help keep you cool during the summertime.

Essential oils like Peppermint, Spearmint and even Eucalyptus can help with the sweltering hot days.

Peppermint
is full of menthol and is known for its ability to help headaches with the way it relaxes and eases tension. We love both the cooling sensation as well as the invigorating pick-me-up that we get when we use this essential oil in our Summer Sun Spray recipe.

Spearmint as an alternative to Peppermint is lighter in aroma and but has the same benefits and properties. Use together or separately - it's entirely up to your preference!

Eucalyptus acts as a nice option to Peppermint and Spearmint essential oils as it has similar cooling effects. Eucalyptus globulus is our workhorse while Eucalyptus radiata’s scent is more subtle, but we love both for their excellent abilities to provide a cooling sensation while also keeping us alert.

Put your essential oils to work this summer and try making our Summer Sun Spray recipe to keep you and your loved ones cool.

Sunburn Spray with Lavender and Peppermint

Getting caught out in the sun without sunscreen is a bummer.

It’s painful and can leave you feeling desperate for relief.

Utilizing Peppermint’s cooling properties and Lavender’s healing abilities, we’ve created two recipes that will help get you through this unfortunate experience.

Safe for use on children, these are mom-created and mom-approved for the whole family.

Fun Fact: Lavender is known as the “Swiss Army Knife” of essential oils.

Not only is it calming and helpful for stress relief and promoting a good night’s sleep, but it is also efficient for minor cases of cuts, bruises, skin irritations, and burns due to its antiseptic qualities - this makes it the first thing we grab when it comes to our children.

Peppermint contains a significant amount of menthol which gives it a cooling sensation.

Menthol is also known to help relax and ease tension headaches and minor muscular aches and pains.

To make the cooling and healing spray you will need a 4oz Glass Mister Bottle. Simply add ingredients below and shake to combine.

- 10 Drops of Lavender Essential Oil
- 10 Drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
- 10 Drops of Vitamin E OilFill the rest of the bottle with witch hazel or distilled water.
Shake before use and spray onto sunburn as needed for instant relief.

Alternatively you can add the essential oils to your preferred carrier oil or unscented lotion and gently rub into sunburnt skin.

Hydrosols are an equally effective option for soothing sunburns, both when used by themselves or with essential oils added.
Hydrosols (aka floral waters or distillates) are natural products collected during the process of essential oil distillation.

They have similar properties to the corresponding essential oils but are less concentrated, making hydrosols perfect for soothing a sunburn, or irritated/inflamed skin.

They’re also naturally astringent - hydrosols tighten, firm, and tone skin while reducing excess oils and minimizing large pores.

Use Neroli, Rose, or Lavender hydrosols daily as a hydrating facial mist to really reap the benefits!

Cuts & Scrapes Roll-on

Summertime means the kids are always outdoors, meaning the kids are always getting little bumps and bruises.

This DIY is a simple roll-on packed full of kid-safe healing energy.

We wanted to make something simple yet effective with an aroma everyone will want to smell like ALL the time.

Step in Mandarin and Cypress essential oils.

If you’re looking to heal cuts fast, Cypress essential oil is a great choice.

Its antiseptic qualities are due to the presence of camphene, an important component in this powerful essential oil. Revered for its ability to treat wounds, this essential oil can be used as a tool to help prevent infections!

It is also highly valued for its ability to aid the respiratory system, remove toxins from the body, and help relieve nervousness and anxiety through aromatherapy.

Mandarin essential oil is one of our favorite essential oils. Loved for its aromatherapeutic qualities, Mandarin is a powerful tool to help combat nervousness, tension, stress, and even has the ability to aid in nausea relief. Mandarin’s effectiveness in protecting wounds from infections or becoming septic is well known and has been used for centuries.

It has the ability to form a protective covering on a wound, blocking the intrusion of microbes.

To make this topical healing oil, add 30 drops Mandarin
essential oil and 10 drops Cypress essential oil into an empty roll-on bottle and fill the rest of the bottle with your favorite carrier oil.

For first aid we recommend Sweet Almond or Grapeseed, but you can’t go wrong with Jojoba or Fractionated Coconut oil as well.

Shake to combine and use on minor cuts and scrapes as needed.
