What are essential oils, and how do they work?

Essential oils are highly concentrated extracts from the aromatic parts of the herbs, flowers, trees and grasses and have been in use for thousands of years. They are true products of nature that can positively influence your emotional and physical well-being.

When essential oils are inhaled, the vapors are detected by the olfactory receptors neurons that then pass a nerve message to the limbic system of the brain. This is where the physiologic states such as blood pressure, heart rate, stress level, hormone balance, and memory are affected by chemicals in the essential oils. 

Why use aromatherapy in a hospital setting?

The use of CAM, complementary and alternative medicine, or integrative medicine as it is sometimes known, has gained popularity in recent years as a viable choice in the hospital setting to complement traditional medicine by filling in the gaps of care to treat the whole person. Ongoing hospital studies and trials have found that aromatherapy use helps aid in some of the most common patient complaints; anxiety, sleep, pain, and nausea. As a result, CAM therapies have helped reduce inpatient costs, length of stay (LOS), and use of medications. It also has been found to increase patient scores and outcomes.

Testing

All oils undergo various 3rd party tests, from Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) to more standard testing of Optical Rotation, Refractive Index, and Specific Gravity. But most importantly, we do not get lost in the high-tech side alone…AROMA is one of the most important tests; if it does not smell right, we do not buy it!
