An inevitable part of summer is bugs and all that comes with them. That's why we’ve put together a knockout DIY to combat those bites whether big or small.
Here is what you will need:
Chamomile - Its soothing effect is especially helpful for bug bites, reducing redness, itching, and irritation. Chamomile can help speed up healing and recovery times.
Lavender - Although it’s known best for its mood-improving and calming effects, Lavender essential oil has many other benefits and can help reduce the pain and itchiness that come with bug bites.
Peppermint
- Peppermint is an extremely versatile EO that is often used for relieving pain and swelling. When applied to the skin (properly diluted in a carrier oil), it exerts a cooling sensation which is precisely what you need after being bitten.
In addition to aiding in stopping that stinging, burning, and itching sensation, Peppermint essential oil may also reduce the risk of the bites becoming infected and speed up the natural healing process.
Tea Tree
- Tea tree is a potent antiseptic EO. Used for hundreds of years to treat a variety of skin complaints, studies suggest that Tea Tree oil is a natural antihistamine, reducing the body’s allergic reactions and itching sensations. Many who use Tea Tree EO for bites say it is a helpful tool for alleviating swelling and itching.
Witch Hazel - Not an EO in the strictest sense of the term, witch hazel is water distilled from the leaves and stems of Hamamelis virginiana plant. The resulting tonic may prevent bites from becoming infected by fighting bacteria and keeping the injury clean. Witch hazel is also used to reduce inflammation and bruising.
Aloe Vera - Aloe Vera is one of nature’s most versatile plants due to its many healing benefits. Applying Aloe to bug bites can provide great relief and ease the painful itching and swelling often associated. The gel within its leaves has been used to assist in treating insect bites and stings for centuries
To make, add 2 drops of each EO to an empty roll-on bottle and fill the remainder of the bottle with half Aloe Vera and half witch hazel.
…and just like that. Done. As with many of our recipes and DIYs, living naturally doesn’t have to be complex.
Warning: In case of an allergic reaction, such as excessive itching, swelling, and inflammation, or difficulty breathing occurs following a bite, call a doctor immediately.
