How to Use Essential Oils for Cleaning Your Home

It’s that time of year again - winter is fading into a distant memory and we’re all itching to throw open the windows and let the fresh air in.  The yearly ritual of spring cleaning can be cleansing and refreshing both for your home and your mood.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to use harsh chemicals to achieve your deep cleaning goals!  There are a lot of safe natural products you can use instead that also have the side benefit of being good for your health and wellness.

We’ve put together our recommended essential oils for cleaning to help you get started!

Natural Cleaning Products

As you build out your natural cleaning collection, we suggest the following base products to keep on hand:

  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Reusable spray bottles

These items are cleaning powerhouses and are the base of many natural cleaning products.  Below we’ve shared our best tips for using essential oils for cleaning your home.

What are the Best Essential Oils for Cleaning Your House?

Lemon: Lemon essential oil is a great option to encourage freshness. We love it in the kitchen, and because it helps increase concentration and alertness. Try it in your office or study spaces.

One way to use: A few drops of Lemon essential oil with a combination of distilled water and distilled white vinegar in a spray bottle and voilà! You have a refreshing all-purpose cleaner.  Spray surfaces, wipe clean, and enjoy the uplifting citrus scent.

Orange: This refreshingly fruity essential oil helps bolster a positive outlook and mental clarity. Because Orange essential oil is good for stress, use it in spaces where you like to relax.

One way to use: Combine a few drops of Orange essential oil with ½ oz each of distilled white vinegar and olive oil to create a natural wood polish! Use with a soft cloth for optimal results.

Peppermint: Peppermint essential oil helps increase alertness and focus, making it perfect for busy spring cleaning days. Bonus: it can help deter spiders, ants, and even mice!

One way to use:  Mix a few drops into a spray bottle filled halfway with distilled water and half distilled white vinegar to create an effective window cleaner!

Grapefruit:  Grapefruit essential oil is uplifting and detoxifying - try blending it with other citrus essential oils to make a powerful cleanser, deodorizer, and mood booster.

One way to use:  Make a refreshing rug powder by mixing about 40 drops of your citrus essential oil blend with 2 cups baking soda and 1 cup citric acid in a jar or bowl.  Sprinkle evenly over your carpet and let sit for about 10 minutes before vacuuming up.

Lavender:  This floral scent accentuates the beauty of spring.  Lavender essential oil is revered for its calming benefits and widely known for its antiseptic and antifungal properties.  Mix with Cedarwood or Eucalyptus essential oils for bonus health and wellness benefits.

One way to use:  For an upholstery and fabric mist mix 18 drops of Lavender essential oil per ounce of distilled water in a spray bottle, shake well, and spritz on carpets, curtains, linens, closets and drawers, and even your car upholstery.
