How to Dilute Safely
Learn · Safety
Essential oils are highly concentrated, so before they go on skin they need to be blended into a carrier oil. Diluting isn't just safer - it helps the aroma last and spread beautifully.
A simple rule: in aromatherapy, more doesn't mean better. Too high a concentration can lead to an unwanted reaction, not a better result.
The simple rule
For most adults, a 3% dilution or less is the standard for topical use - about 3 drops of essential oil to every 97 drops of carrier oil. For children, during pregnancy, for elderly individuals, or for anyone with a chronic illness, use a 1% dilution or lower, and consult a healthcare provider first.
Drops per ounce
| Dilution | Drops per ounce of carrier oil |
|---|---|
| 1% | 6 drops |
| 2% | 12 drops |
| 3% | 18 drops |
Dilution by use
| Use | Recommended dilution |
|---|---|
| Facial cosmetics | 0.2-1.5% |
| Body massage | 1.5-3% |
| Bath & body products | 1-3% |
| Hair care | 1.5-3% |
| Air mist / room freshener | 2-3% |
| Surface spray | 3% |
Diffusion is different
When you diffuse, the oil disperses into the air rather than onto skin, so no carrier oil is needed. Add 3-5 drops to a water-based diffuser.
Choosing a carrier oil
A carrier oil is a neutral, skin-nourishing base that "carries" the essential oil onto the skin. Popular choices include jojoba, sweet almond, fractionated coconut, and grapeseed oil. Jojoba is especially long-lasting and suits most skin.
Always patch test first
Before using a new oil or blend on a larger area, apply a small amount of the diluted blend to the inside of your forearm and wait 24 hours. If you notice redness, itching, or irritation, discontinue use.
Extra care with certain oils
Photosensitive citrus
Orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, and bergamot can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid sun for about 12 hours after topical use, or enjoy them in the diffuser.
Warming spice oils
Cinnamon, clove, and oregano are potent skin irritants. Dilute well, patch test, and consider enjoying them as diffused room scents.
Pregnancy & children
Some oils aren't recommended during pregnancy or for young children. When in doubt, consult a healthcare provider before use.
The golden rules
Always dilute before applying to skin. Avoid contact with eyes. Keep oils out of reach of children and pets. For external use only.
